The History of Security Doors
It is interesting to think that things weren’t always the way that we know them to be today. When it comes to safety doors, there was a time before they were used in homes or considered a necessity. In this article we delve into this past and find out when security doors were invented, as well as the differences in their uses today.
Sifting through the trends
Did you know the wire mesh used for sieves was the beginning of safety door manufacturing? During the 1860s, an employee at an American sieve making company in Connecticut had the idea to coat the wire cloth used for sieves with paint and sell it for window screens. This became so popular that the company became a major producer of screens for doors or windows – one of the first instances of safety screens.
From luxury to necessity
A newspaper excerpt from 1897 tells us that it was around this period that safety screens were no longer considered a luxury, but one of the necessities of modern life. At this point in time, the doors were used to save damage to paint or furniture. It was only later that these were used for security.
Security doors today
These days, the doors have many uses. Apart from safety and criminal deterrence in durability, they can allow airflow through the home while maintaining privacy, and add value to your home. The variety of colours, styles and materials that exist today also mean there will be the perfect style to enhance the look of your home.
