The history of window shutters

Window shutters were first used as far back as in Ancient Greece, eventually used across the Mediterranean to prevent too much sunlight from entering the home as well as provide greater ventilation.

As explained by Building Conservation, shutters date back to the 1200s in England. They were initially popular to cover windows that were unglazed, helping to keep out wind, rain, insects and birds. Most shutters could be found on houses between the 18th and 19th centuries, with shutter styles ranging from hinged and sliding timber shutters to Gregorian styles.

Modern window shutters

It is highly unlikely that modern shutters will stop being used in the near future, as they continue to be a classic window treatment, now with a variety of materials and shutter options for every aesthetic. Interior shutters can be made of timber, aluminium or PVC for any home environment. They also continue to be valuable for privacy, noise reduction, natural insulation and light control.
